Intelligent Search Engine Marketing
SEO work can either be an active or passive form of promoting your products & services. It can also be very expensive if you are not careful (but it does not have to be, if you follow the steps below).
Here are the points for you to consider before you commit to this solution...
Search engine ranking is essentially about your product or service and NOT your website. Think on how you would use search engines.
Note: Some industries are highly competitive in search engine ranking (In these industries, ranking is highly volatile and so pay-per-clicks, etc. are possible solutions) And you'll need deep pockets to compete. However, many search engine methods are still affordable and if you keep to the basics given below, you can yield excellent results that put you ahead of the game.
The first step then is to look at your product/service and note down how people would look for your product or service. How would someone search for you? What key words & phrases will they use? This is important for it may sometimes not be so obvious. Be creative. Search your memory, and compile a list. This now becomes the key words/phrases for the search.
Note: To keep your costs down and for optimum results, undertake this yourself. Undertaking this exercise will also help you understand your own business better. If you hire an SEO company to do this, they will ask you questions to answers only you can know.
With these keywords you can now hire a design company, with SEO experience, to undertake the meta-tagging work (which makes your website friendly to search engines) This is a highly-specialized skill as there are many ways to craft the keyword meta tags (also title/description/link/image tags, etc). For optimum results, there's also keyword density to consider.
The next consideration is to submit your website to search engines Note that there are many smaller, regional and localized search engines besides the major ones like Yahoo! and Google. There are also service- and industry-specific directories & indexes.
eMasters' search engine submissions are all carefully hand-tailored for optimum results The reason for this is each search engine provides specific categories for submission and often, close decisions are made before deciding which is the BEST category/categories to submit to. This step cannot be done properly by bots.
Other considerations to improve your search engine ranking is via site activity generated from advertising & promotions via your ezine or in other ezines, etc as increased activity raises your ranking.
If you consider the points above BEFORE looking at pay-per-clicks, one-way inbound links, reciprocal linking and other forms of search engine marketing, or before purchasing hits/traffic... you can keep your costs affordable by keeping to the fundamentals of SEO.
I have included below, the search results for some of eMasters' products/services These results have all been achieved by keeping to basic/organic methods (without using pay-per-clicks or reciprocal links, and without puchasing hits/traffic, etc).

Here are the steps we take to achieve the front page & top results you see above:
Besides giants like Google & Yahoo! as well as other major search engines, we also hand submit to a large number of directories and indexes Although this exercise was carried out about 3 years ago, our search engine results are still good.
If you've done the keywords and meta tagging well, and have also discriminately carried out your search engine submissions (not by bots), then the results can continue paying in spades.
